Arbutus Ridge

This area, south of Kitsilano and west of Arbutus Street and its ubiquitous railway tracks, includes the neighbourhoods of Arbutus Ridge (north of King Edward Ave) and Mackenzie Heights (south of King Edward Ave). A small valley separates Arbutus Ridge from Mackenzie Heights. The community is primarily upscale, single-family houses that are convenient to nearby shopping districts, and only 20 minutes from downtown Arbutus Ridge has traditionally been popular with Greek-Canadians, and is home to Vancouver's Hellenic Community Centre (West 29th and Arbutus). Arbutus Shopping Centre and The Ridge Theatre are the primary landmarks in the neighbourhood.

History (from Wikipedia)

One of the catalysts for growth in the neighbourhood was the existence of the Vancouver-Steveston Interurban route of the British Columbia Electric Railway, known as the Lulu Island Railway, which ran between 1905 and 1958. St. Mary's Kerrisdale, an Anglican church built in 1913, is one of the heritage structures in the uplands area of the neighbourhood.

Homes

This affluent area is made up almost entirely of single family homes on tree-lined streets and larger-than-average lot sizes, prized because most hillside homes have a beautiful view of downtown and toward the North Shore mountains. There are some early Vancouver homes in Arbutus Ridge (along 37th Avenue) that date to before WWI, built in the English Arts and Crafts Style. There are also some tightly designed 1930s homes (known as "Vancouver Specials") in the neighbourhood, but most of Arbutus Ridge was developed after World War II. Current zoning limits any new developments in the community to non-rental units.

Shopping

Shops in the area can be found along Mackenzie and Macdonald Streets, with lots of restaurants and coffee shops, plus the Arbutus Village shopping centre (Arbutus north of King Edward). There is lots of shopping to the north along West Broadway and along West 4th.
